Most registered agent reviews you find online are written by sites that recommend whichever service pays them the highest commission this quarter. The recommendations rotate. The reasoning is thin. Every option is somehow the “best” depending on which page you land on.
This is not that. We recommend Northwest Registered Agent as the default registered agent across this site, and we have for the entire time we have been writing about LLC compliance. They are not the cheapest. They are not flashy. They do not have a celebrity spokesperson. What they have is a flat $125/year price that does not change at renewal, real offices in all 50 states, and a customer service team that picks up the phone.
Here is the honest version: what they do, what they get right, where they fall short, and which other services we would point you to if Northwest does not fit your situation.
Northwest accepts legal and government mail on behalf of your LLC. When a document arrives at one of their offices (whether it is a lawsuit, an annual report reminder, a tax notice, or a Secretary of State letter), they scan it and email it to you, almost always the same business day.
If you form your LLC through them, they prepare and file your Articles of Organization, list their business address on the public filing in place of yours, and include the first year of registered agent service at no extra charge.
That is the whole core service. Everything else they offer (mail forwarding, virtual office, phone numbers, email accounts) is an optional add-on you have to actively select.
Flat pricing with no upsell games. The checkout flow is clean. $125/year for registered agent service. $39 plus state fees for formation. They do not pre-check add-on boxes. They do not offer you a $99 “basic” tier and then upsell you to a $249 “recommended” tier on the next page. This is unusual in the industry. LegalZoom, ZenBusiness, and most formation services run aggressive multi-step checkout flows specifically designed to inflate the order total. Northwest does not.
Privacy by default. Northwest uses their own business address on your LLC public filings, which means your home address stays off the Secretary of State records. They also do not sell your filing data to third-party marketers. This second part matters more than people realize. Most budget formation services sell your filing data the day it hits the state database, which is why your phone starts ringing with offers from registered agent services and business loan companies within 48 hours of forming an LLC. With Northwest, that does not happen.
Real offices in every state. A registered agent is required by law to have a physical street address in each state where they accept service. Some budget services use mail forwarding arrangements or shared virtual addresses that technically may not satisfy this requirement if it is ever tested. Northwest owns or leases actual office space in all 50 states. Process servers can show up at the door. Mail arrives at a real building.
Human support. They call their support team Corporate Guides. These are US-based staff who answer the phone Monday through Friday, 6 AM to 5 PM Pacific. No chatbots. No press-1-for-this menus. You can request the same representative for follow-up calls. This sounds like a small thing until you have spent 25 minutes on hold with a competitor trying to figure out why your filing got rejected.
Renewal price does not change. $125/year year one. $125/year year two. $125/year year five. This is rare. Harbor Compliance starts at $99 and jumps to $149 at renewal. ZenBusiness starts at $99 with formation and jumps to $199. LegalZoom is $249 forever. Northwest's flat structure makes long-term cost easy to plan around.
No service is perfect. Three things to know going in.
No weekend support. Their phone lines are closed Saturday and Sunday. For most LLC owners this does not matter (state filing offices are also closed weekends), but if you have an urgent compliance question on a Saturday morning, you are waiting until Monday.
Cancellation requires a phone call. Multiple user reviews mention that cancelling registered agent service requires contacting them directly rather than clicking a button in your account dashboard. This is a common complaint across the industry, not unique to Northwest, but worth noting if you anticipate needing to cancel.
Free trial add-ons that auto-renew. Their formation package bundles in free trials for a domain name, business email, and a business phone number. These auto-renew at full price after the trial unless you cancel them. The core registered agent service does not have this issue. The trials are clearly disclosed, but they are easy to overlook if you are clicking through the formation flow quickly.
If your LLC is foreign qualified in multiple states, you pay $125/year per state. Northwest does not offer a multi-state discount. A 3-state LLC pays $375 a year. A 5-state LLC pays $625 a year. This is the same structure every major registered agent uses.
The math gets interesting when you compare to competitors. Five states with Northwest is $625 a year. Five states with LegalZoom at $249 is $1,245 a year. Same service, $620 a year difference. Over five years, that gap is $3,100.

Northwest is not the cheapest option on this list. Harbor Compliance year-one ($99) is cheaper. Bizee (formerly Incfile) is also cheaper if you also use them for formation. But Northwest's flat renewal price beats Harbor on the five-year math, and their privacy and support are stronger than the budget options.

You want a single registered agent across multiple states. Their flat per-state pricing scales predictably, and one login covers everything.
You care about keeping your home address off public records. Their address goes on your filings. They do not sell your filing data to marketers. This is genuinely better than most competitors.
You expect to call customer service at some point. Phone support, US-based, no chatbots. Worth the price difference vs. Harbor or Bizee on its own.
You are forming a new LLC and want to avoid upsell games. Their formation flow is clean. $39 plus state fees, registered agent included for the first year, no pre-checked add-ons.
If your priority is the absolute lowest cost in year one. Harbor Compliance at $99 beats Northwest year-one. Just remember the renewal jumps to $149 in year two.
